CUPS statement on Pope Francis’ apology
From Wade Maude, CUPS Indigenous Programming Coordinator and Carlene Donnelly, Executive Director of CUPS
On what was a powerful, and emotional day for our entire CUPS community, we listened and reflected upon the historic apology from Pope Francis on the devastating legacy of the system of residential schools. We respect and appreciate this first step from the leader of the Roman Catholic faith.
His words echoed from Maskwacis, Alberta, and were heard by people across Canada and the world. History was made and will continue to be made. Moving ahead, we walk together as human beings to, never forget, but also support a continued mission of hope, healing, truth and reconciliation.
In saying this, we know there are mixed emotions and levels of acceptance throughout Indigenous communities, as well as others. These feelings are valid and must not be understated or forgotten.
“I myself wish to reaffirm this, with shame and unambiguously. I humbly beg forgiveness for the evil committed by so many Christians against the Indigenous peoples.” – Pope Francis
For the entire CUPS team and the community of people we serve, we join leaders around the country in directing attention to what integral steps come next, and continued efforts to support individuals and families who, still to this day, face the effects of intergenerational trauma.
