CUPS Client Story: Transitioning from crisis to stability
When you’re fleeing a domestic violence situation and you’ve made the decision to leave…you just leave, often with the clothes on your back and nothing else. You’re in survival mode and all you can think about is getting away from a dangerous environment and to somewhere safe, where you might find a connection.
For Joan*, she had a past connection to Calgary. When she fled a violent home situation in Saskatchewan a couple years ago, Joan hitchhiked to Calgary and landed at a women’s shelter. That’s when she was first introduced to CUPS.
Immediate support through the Crisis Intervention Fund
The CUPS Crisis Intervention Fund (CIF) is designed to provide fast support for basic needs. For Joan, that started with getting a roof over her head and food to eat. CUPS was able to find her a private rental in a quiet neighbourhood as a starting point. The CIF helped Joan with money for rent and the damage deposit, as well as grocery gift cards. All of this took place while waiting for her income support application to be approved.
Joan’s story is one of many that demonstrate the importance of having fast, immediate support available for those who are in a state of crisis. There is a transition between crisis and recovery and that step often needs financial support. In the last year, the Crisis Intervention Fund has provided resources to more than 560 individuals and families who are all in a point of flux when it comes to housing. Whether it’s paying the damage deposit or rent, or helping to keep utilities turned on, the fund is designed for fast, short-term support.
For Joan, the CIF fund made a profound difference in helping her find her footing to chart a new course forward.
