Kickoff Breakfast Raises $60,000!

And more, and more, and more, and more, and more....

Usually fans of the Calgary Stampeders are adding yardage to the kickoff when they start cheering for more. After 17 years of participating in the CUPS / Calgary Stampeders Kickoff Breakfast, it turns out 'more' applies to raising money and support for CUPS Health & Education Centres as well.

This year's breakfast, sponsored by Apache Canada, and held at the Hyatt Regency on May 21, 2009 raised a whopping $60,000 for CUPS. Add that to the more than $625,000 raised over the years through CUPS' association with the Stampeders and you come up with a pretty impressive total.

The Kickoff Breakfast is about more than money, though. This year's breakfast was all about celebration: celebrating the Stampeders as the 2008 Grey Cup Champions and their bid to repeat in 2009, celebrating Stampeders players and coaches from yesterday and today, celebrating the city's' support of a great football club, and celebrating the success of CUPS - success that comes from the combined effect of community support and the hardwork of people who are seeking positive change in their lives.

Stampeder Alumni and former CUPS' Player Representative Jay McNeil acknowledged the hardwork and dedication of the people served at CUPS. Speaking to a speechless and moved room following a presentation by Tanya Silver, one the people served at CUPS, McNeil acknowledged her courage and strength - drawing a parallel with football players - in sharing her story of overcoming addiction and abuse.

Acknowledging the support of the community, CUPS awarded the annual Giving Wings to the Dream award to longtime volunteer Brigid Stewart. She shared her reasons for volunteering with the audience, spoke to the importance of opening your eyes to all kinds of life in Calgary, and acknowledged the importance of CUPS in our community. Timothy Wall, newly appointed President of Apache Canada attended the event and spoke about the importance of building community. He renewed Apache's interest in making Calgary a better place for all its citizens. Presenting CUPS with a cheque from the funds raised at the Breakfast was a great kickoff for his time in Calgary and reminded us all of the power of commitment.

The Annual CUPS / Calgary Stampeders Kickoff Breakfast has done great things for CUPS and the people it serves over the years. The strength of the relationship has grown and opened up many possibilities.

What's next? $685,000 and more, and more, and more, and more.
